You will be provided with a course packet and reinforcing items for at home activities. Some of the categories of signs that will be taught are 1) requesting, 2) foods, 3) opposites, 4) numbers, 5) colors, 6) routines, and 7) the alphabet. You will also learn how to support your child academically, as they mature, with learning strategies and techniques to help them with learning to spell and read using sign language.
12. Will the use of sign language cause a delay in my child's speech or language skills?
It will not. Evidence shows that the opposite is actually true. Lapinski (1996) has explained that using sign language and the eye contact that it requires, helps children to learn that communication is a process that is rewarding as well as reciprocal. The most important factor in language development, is the interaction between adult and child.
13. If my child signs, does this mean that they will never speak?
No, it does not. As mentioned above using sign language helps children to learn the communication process, as it trains two of their senses, listening and watching. When learning American Sign Language, the signs are always taught alongside the spoken word and used with the spoken word (Example: Do you want more food? (While signing "more" and/or "food"). Learning sign language is about providing your child with all the resources to master the language in every aspect.
14. When will my child begin signing?
On average, most babies will sign back around their first birthday when they learn that communication is give and take. This means that they must give you something (gesture, word, sign) in order to get something. Most babies will use at least two gestures (waving, clapping, pointing, etc.) before they are able to sign.
15. Is my child too young or too old to sign?
Whether your child is 6 months or 5 years old, American Sign Language is a beneficial language for communicating. For babies and young toddlers, signing can help them communicate their wants and needs before they are verbal, reducing frustration and tantrums. For older toddlers, sign language provides a concrete visual representation of their emotions, physical state and can help with difficult words to say like computer, elephant, and spaghetti. For preschool and school-age children, sign language serves as a great tool for communicating and can also assist with spelling and reading tasks.
16. We already speak multiple languages will American sign language confuse our child?
No, it will not. Acquiring new languages is good for the brain. Neuroscience shows that learning another language can prevent cognitive decline and actually grows the size of your brain. You can speak in the language that you prefer and use the sign with the word. Signs help bridge the two spoken languages together.
